Calvary Baptist Church of Oxford was organized on June 7, 1945. The church grew out of a home prayer meeting group. This group of believers in Jesus Christ organized themselves into a congregation and was known as the Second Baptist Church with Lewis P. Bowen as pastor. The church was accepted into the Calhoun Baptist Association at their 1945 annual meeting and continues to suppor teh work of the CBA. The young church bough a building located at 124 Choccolocco Street in downtown Oxford and had 52 charter members. In 1951, the congregation of Second Baptist Church changed its name to Calvary Baptist Church. In 1958, under the leadership of the lat Rev. Oscar Cotton, the church expanded it's existing struction adding sanctuary and classroom space.

Calvary continues to strive to be a church on mission for the Lord. We minister to the community through Bible study, worship, and visitation. We try to minister to the whole person on a spiritual, physical, and emotional level. The Lord blessed the church and allowed them to expand again in 1984, purchasing the adjacent American Legion Hall to provide growing room.

In the 1990's, we made a major decision and purchased land on Highway 78 West and the Caleb Project was launched. Calvary began building our current worship center and we plan to expand again in the future. Many church members have contributed their valuable time to help by painting classrooms, landscaping, assembling furniture, and performing any other jobs that needed to be done.

Over time, the building and location may have changed, but the values and beliefs of Calvary Baptist Church are still going strong. Like our church, our belifs continue to grow and expand, reaching out into the community to those who are in spiritual need and providing them with the strenth to carry on in their journey with Christ.
